Arnold Page's Story
In the first few months of 2009, I felt a growing desire to introduce people to the Lord. Although I had shared a few times before on a personal level I felt God was leading me to do more, so I spent time praying to discover how He wanted me to move forward. While visiting the Christian Resources Exhibition with a friend in May, the last stand I visited was Evangelism Explosion (ee). I discovered that ee were launching that very day a new resource called Xee, a course that equipped people to share their faith with the younger "Generation X". I was reminded about ee, having bought and read James Kennedy's book in 1970. His words chimed with my own feelings and brought back a memory of a visiting preacher whom I heard at the age of 12. I remember the preacher's words so clearly – if each of us could lead ten people to Jesus during our lifetime and each of those ten people did the same then over a hundred people would come to know Jesus, and we would be like the seed in Christ's parable that multiplied a hundred times. I felt so inspired, and do so to this day.
Following my visit to the ee stand, I bought the course materials and literature for Xee, attended the first Xee Facilitators' Training Day in the UK, and started to study the course for myself. I was so inspired I wanted to share it with others at my church. In August 2009 I was given the opportunity to share at one of our Sunday evening services that is attended by mostly young people. A number of young people expressed an interest in taking part in an Xee course. I also met with my cell group at church and discovered that people were keen to share their faith but didn't know how. Five other members of the group showed an interest in doing an Xee course and on the 25th November we started an Xee group in our church using the Life Forever materials.
Towards the end of 2009 our vicar said he had been seeking God's heart for the church. He shared from Matthew 9 V 28 which states "Pray to the Lord for the harvest to send out labourers." I felt so blessed with his words as God had planted this desire in me and had given me the tools to help bring in the harvest.
Our Xee group progressed well. One Saturday afternoon we decided to venture out into the local town to put into practice what we had been learning about connecting with people. We all felt nervous, but our hearts were resting in the Lord. Our aim was to start conversations with people we wouldn't normally talk to, and to learn how to connect with them. We discovered that by using what we had learnt on the course we were more confident about connecting with others. One or two of the people we met that afternoon were actually grateful for the opportunity to talk to someone! In fact we were all surprised at how open and friendly everyone was.
We initially met once a fortnight for 2 hours. Following the Christmas break we decided to meet once a week to allow us to grasp hold of what God was teaching us. Every week we would encourage each other to put into practice what we had learned and found confidence in sharing how the course has enabled us to open opportunities with others to share about the Good News of Jesus.
Our vicar is keen to see the fruits of Xee and has encouraged us to take opportunities to put what we have learned into practice within specific outreach groups within the church such as Open Door (a welcome and caring group for the main Sunday morning congregation) and Walk with Me (a walking group which gives members the opportunity to invite friends and neighbours to join them on a monthly ramble).
Xee has taught me a lot about communicating with others, and has given me the tools to help share my faith in God more confidently and openly. There are so many useful hints and techniques that I regularly need to practise for when God calls me to use them. As children we learn how to talk by practising words and sounds, and the more we practise the more we learn and the more confident we feel. That's how God works in our lives through Xee.
One of the first things covered in Xee is how to share your story by writing out your testimony. By writing out your testimony and sharing it with the group it helps you to understand your own faith and how it has made a difference in your life. On the journey of discovery about your own encounter with God it becomes easier to share it with others.
As Christians we are called to live a Christ-like life. By sharing the love of God and how he gives us abundant life and by the example of our own life we show others the light of Christ. Xee gives you more confidence to share your story with all you meet and opens up a door for God to do the rest.
